Fortuna Dusseldorf has completed its new coaching team. New head coach Markus Anfang has added Ilia Gruev as a second assistant to support co-coach Florian Junge. Ilia Gruev was with third-tier club FC Ingolstadt since summer 2024 and last worked with head coach Sabrina Wittmann. The 55-year-old Bulgarian will attend his first training session in Dusseldorf on Monday. Ilia Gruev says according to the club's statement: Fortuna stands for passion, tradition, and clear sporting ambitions. Born in Sofia, Gruev was an assistant coach at Hajduk Split and 1. FC Kaiserslautern under Krasimir Balakov. Gruev was the head coach in Duisburg from 2015 to 2018. In 2011, Gruev was an assistant coach of the Bulgarian national team under national coach Lothar Matthäus for three games. Ilia Gruev wants to contribute to Fortuna Dusseldorf achieving its goals this season. The club announced the signing of Ilia Gruev on Saturday. Earlier in the week, the club had parted ways with coach Daniel Thioune after more than three and a half years.
