The Jewish Community of Düsseldorf hosts a memorial tournament for Ilan Fiorentino, who died in the Hamas terror attack on Israel. Four teams will participate in the tournament: the previous year's winner "Sha’ar HaNegev "Fior" Football Veteran Team" from Fiorentino's hometown in Nahal Oz, Israel, an Israeli student team from the Sapir College in Sderot, the "FC Landtag" consisting of members and employees of the Landtag in NRW, and a group of Iranian democracy activists called "FC Lion and Sun". The tournament aims to promote a peaceful coexistence, emphasizes Oded Horowitz, chairman of the Jewish Community of Düsseldorf. Friends of Ilan Fiorentino described him as a particularly helpful person who was not only passionate about football, Horowitz said. Therefore, Fiorentino also deserves to be remembered with a football tournament. Before the first kick-off of the tournament, Ilan Fiorentino's wife Sharon spoke to the four teams and the audience. She firmly believes that her husband would have been deeply moved by this type of commemoration, the widow emphasized after a video with greetings from Israel was played. NRW's deputy prime minister, Mona Neubaur, who also spoke to the audience on Sunday, explained that she wanted to show with her presence that Jewish life in NRW is "free and safe". Protests took place in front of the player hotel on Saturday evening.
