The spring of 1979 was a time of awakening and euphoria for all Fortuna Düsseldorf fans. The city pulsed to the rhythm of football, as our Red-Whites wrote history on the European stage. It was the season when Fortuna not only triumphed in the DFB-Pokal but also embarked on a breathtaking run in the European Cup Winners' Cup, which was destined to culminate in a legendary final.
This European journey was dotted with unforgettable moments. After a convincing start against Romanian side Universitatea Craiova, a true challenge awaited in the Round of 16: Glasgow Rangers. With heart and soul and a disciplined performance, Fortuna prevailed in two thrilling encounters. But the real test came in the quarter-finals in the form of Inter Milan. The first leg at the venerable Rheinstadion was a spectacle; the 0-0 against the Italians left everything open. At the San Siro, our team then put in a mature performance, sensationally advancing to the semi-finals with a 2-1 victory. There, Baník Ostrava from Czechoslovakia awaited, also proving no easy hurdle. But after a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg and a convincing 2-1 success in the return leg, it was clear: Fortuna Düsseldorf was in the final of a European competition!
The entire city was in a state of emergency. Basel, the host city of the final on May 16, 1979, became a sea of red and white. Thousands of Fortuna fans made their way to support their team against the mighty FC Barcelona – a team studded with world stars like Johan Neeskens and the young Hans Krankl. The atmosphere in the St. Jakob-Stadion was electrifying, a true football festival that Fortuna fans still praise in the highest terms.
The match itself was a five-act drama. Barcelona took an early lead, but our Fortuna showed their indomitable fighting spirit. Thomas Allofs equalized, and when Rüdiger Wenzel put Düsseldorf ahead shortly before half-time, the dream seemed within reach. But the Catalans struck back and leveled the score in the second half. It went into extra time – 30 nerve-wracking minutes in which both teams fought for every inch. Unfortunately, it was FC Barcelona who scored the decisive goal in extra time, making it 4-3.
Despite the tragic defeat, the homecoming of our Cup heroes was a triumphant procession. Düsseldorf's city center was filled with tens of thousands celebrating their team. It was a defeat that felt like a victory, for Fortuna had shown Europe what the Red-Whites were capable of. That evening in Basel, that thrilling duel, is more than just a missed title; it is a myth deeply embedded in the F95 DNA. It reminds us of a time when Fortuna Düsseldorf played on par with European giants and captured the hearts of fans with passion and heart and soul. It is an inspiration that constantly reminds us that with unwavering belief and collective effort, anything is possible.
